Long have I searched for the perfect mascaras to make my pathetic blonde, straight eyelashes look like they actually exist. This story started aged aged 11 when I was so desperate to look like I had lovely, luscious eyelashes I literally just used to get a kohl pencil from Natural Collection for £1.99 and draw them on.
Aged 15 or so I discovered the beauty of eyelash curlers, again laden with Natural Collection mascara (also £1.99) which looked great… for about 5 minutes. The mascaras I used never held, or did so for an hour at most. I would come home from school and just think ‘what is the point!’
One epiphany about aged 17 or 18 was when my mum bought me some ‘proper’ make up, in the form of Benefit’s ‘They’re Real’ mascara. And OMG… was this a godsend! My lashes actually looked normal. They didn’t hold for too long, but surpassed anything I had tried before.
This love affair continued for a few years until I reached the tender age of 22 when I accidentally bought the waterproof version of Maybelline’s Lash Sensational and MY GOD. Eureka! The lightbulb moment hit. Maybe Waterproof mascara was the holy grail for straight eyelashes… Maybe a quick Google or YouTube might have told me this was an age old tip and surely everyone with straight eyelashes knew this… But this was my moment.
Suddenly people were commenting on how nice my eyes were and my grandma asked me to stop wearing fake eyelashes. Finally, the moment I had been waiting for had arrived and since I have been continuing the quest the best mascaras for straight eyelashes and am about to share with you what I have found so far!
Maybelline Lash Sensational in Waterproof
This was my eureka moment and to this day I still believe that it is my favourite mascara. The formula is so smooth and non-clumpy, the curved wand is perfect to separate and curl your lashes. The hold is pretty much perfect if you curl your eyelashes- they don’t move down at all! Definitely one for the dramatic look as you can keep building it up without it getting clumpy.
2. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara in Waterproof
This mascara has been hit and miss with people, as far as I am aware. It’s definitely a hit for me though as my lashes were much fuller and the length is so dramatic, this is definitely the mascara that gets me most of the ‘false lashes’ accusations. It does get slightly clumpy, but otherwise it really does live up to its name.

3. Maybelline the Falsies Push Up Drama in Waterproof
A similar formula to Lash Sensational but a little cleaner, if you know what I mean. The effect is more defined and less fluttery, definitely for more of a statement eye for thick and long eyelashes. It doesn’t grab all the lashes in the same way as Lash Sensational, but it’s non-clumpy and makes your lashes look super long!
4. Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes Mascara in Waterproof
I know a lot of people hate this mascara as it is quite dry, but it is honestly a winner for me. It keeps my eyelashes curled all day and is great for everyday wear. It’s effect isn’t as dramatic as some other mascaras, but for an understated curl and an perfect brush for bottom lashes, as the end is small and pointed so it reaches those invisible corner lashes.
5. Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara in Waterproof
I’ve only just started to use this as you can’t get CoverGirl here in the UK (but isn’t it the same as Max Factor?) and I’d read so many good things about it holding a curl. I’ve worn it twice now and can say it definitely does do that. It’s very understated and gives very fine, separate and fluttery natural eyelashes. Definitely the best for everyday!
I hope you enjoyed this post and find it useful. If you have any other suggestions on what works for you, please let me know! I am going todo a general tips post for straight eyelashes too.
